We don't really have a lot of "rules" as in you get a fine or kicked off the site for not following them. These are more safe riding rules that we use when riding.
When I say "we" I am specifically speaking of myself and a few core riders that I ride with on a regular basis. But I think these rules should be for everyone as they are very basic concepts that can help everyone have a good time and stay safe.
I bring them up now because we have had a few people ride with us who have not done so before. Although we haven't had any problems, we have seen some potentials for issues and I figured I better post something.
Read this article about 10 great group riding tips. For specifics about how we ride here are our basic rules.
1) Safety first! No matter how much fun you have during the ride, all that fun is lost if there is an accident. Especially if you are part of that accident.
2) Follow the leader but at your own pace. If you are having trouble keeping up, don't worry about it. We will see you falling back and we will either slow down or pull over or even come back for you if needed.
3) Check your mirrors every once in a while. If the person who was behind you is falling behind, slow down for them. The next person in front of you will do the same until we all get back together.
4) If you need to stop for any reason... Just stop at the first safe place. The riders behind you will also stop if safe. If not, they will pass and then stop when they find a safe place. The riders in front will realize you stopped and will wait or come back for you when it is safe.
5) Take corners at your own speed. Different bikes respond differently in the corners and different riders have different skills and comfort zones. There is no reason to race through a corner just because the bike in front of you does it. And there is no reason to crowd the bike in front of you just because you want to go faster.
6) If you are a normally slower rider, or have trouble taking off from stops, take a position near the rear of the group. This way you won't feel rushed and others won't feel like they are being held back.
7) You can leave the ride at any time. None of our rides require you to stay in the group all the way through. We simply ask that you make sure at least one of the other riders realizes you are leaving. This is usually as simple as waving and getting a wave back from another rider. It really sucks to have everyone stop and try to find a bike that "might be in a ditch" to find out they simply headed home early.
That pretty much covers our rules of group riding. I think you would agree that all of these things are pretty much common sense. They are not meant to put a damper on your ride in any way. You will actually find by using these when you ride with any group that everyone has a more enjoyable ride all the way around.
Hope this helps. Feel free to comment and ask questions.
