Well, I have read comments on a couple sites about the 757 Journey Touring Radial tires for the GoldWing and things seem split right down the middle.

Some people hate them, others love them and almost nothing in the middle. I went and purchased a pair of these tires from the Motorcycle Superstore because these tires are suppose to last longer than the Metzlers or the Dunlop tires (which I am replacing).

After looking at the tires up close, I can see that the tread design is quite nice and should move the water quite well. I am hoping they are just as quiet as the Dunlop tires have been. And at first glance, it appears that the rubber is harder than what I have been riding. This leads me to think that they will have a longer life. But it also make me think that I may lose some performance in the tight corners.

Now for some people, a little performance loss would be no big deal on such a large touring bike, but I tend to push the corners to the point of scraping pegs. Those days may be over with these tires. But I am not going to jump to any conclusions quite yet. I still need to get the tires on the bike. I won't be doing that for a couple more weeks. I have a fair amount of tread left on the set that are on the bike and I am not one for wasting my money.

When the new tires go on, I will record my mileage and give reports every so often. Mainly I am doing this because I have yet to find a review that has any substance in it. They are all just short comments about what this person or that "feels" about the tire. So I will try to be a little more analytical about the process. But of course, you will get to hear about what I "feel" as well. After all, motorcycling is mostly about the feeling and experiencing when you get down to it.

Well, I got the new tires put on today. If you have ever gotten new tires on your motorcycle, you should know that new tires are slick for a while. There is a coating that is put in the mold before the tires are formed. This helps when it is time to remove the new tires from the mold. These tires are no exception. They are just as slick as any other tire I have had in the past.

I must say, I felt like I had just about as much traction as I did the day before with the warn out tires. This is actually a pretty good sign to me as I know my old tires were very much at the end of their life cycle. I might have gotten another couple hundred miles out of them before things got dangerous. And I wouldn't have done any long distance high speed riding on the old tires.

Now let me tell you something that I didn't expect. I rode home in the rain on new tires. Normally that is an exciting experience and not in a good way. But I already have one very positive thing to say about these tires. The tread pattern on these Shinko 757 tires really cuts through the water!

I have never felt so safe while tracking through the water even on tires that have been broken in. These still have that new tire slick feel in the corners but even with that, they feel better than my previous tires when they had good tread on them.

This coming weekend is suppose to give us some good riding weather. By then, the tires will be past the new tire slickness. I will take the bike out and give these new tires a good test.

After almost 1,000 miles of real world riding in all sorts of conditions, I am ready to call these the best tires I have ever had. The only thing left to see is how long do they last...

Motorcycle: 2007 GL1800 Honda Goldwing

- 5 - Wet weather handling
- 5 - Highway riding
- 5 - Low road noise
- 4 - High speed cornering
- ? - Tire life (I'll let you know when I ware them out)
- ? - Over value (I'll let you know when I ware them out)

The high speed cornering isn't the best I have experienced but it also isn't the worse. The rubber on these tires seems harder than what I normally run which I am hoping will equate to longer life. Because this is a touring motorcycle that I am riding, cornering isn't the highest priority on my list but all in all, these tires are very good. I have not experienced any slipping even at full tilt with my pegs on the ground. They just don't seem to have quite the same traction as some of the softer tires I have tried. That being said, I don't feel like I was ever in any danger or even close to the limits of these tires on the Goldwing. The only tires I have had that felt like they gripped better cost a little more money and lasted only 5,000 miles so the investment was rather high for the return. And they didn't do well in the rain at all.

I will continue to keep tabs on the life of the tires and let you know when I ware them out. My testing is all real world riding so I get a very good mix of city, highway and mountain riding. I am also an all weather all year rider in the Pacific Northwest so I see everything from nice sunny days to rain and yes, even a little snow and hail (but I really try to avoid that).

My next post on this subject will be when one of the tires is ready to be replaced.

Over 3,000 miles and the tires are still doing great! Logged just over 600 miles last weekend and every inch of the highway, mountain roads and dirt trails (yep dirt too) felt just fine.
